Image Resizer gives you three ways to set the result. Use Pixels when a website, marketplace, or content system requires an exact width and height. Use Percentage when you want to scale the whole image proportionally. Use Preset for common targets such as an Instagram post, Instagram story, YouTube thumbnail, website banner, or profile picture.

The aspect-ratio lock helps prevent accidental stretching. In Pixels mode, changing the width can automatically calculate the matching height, and changing the height can calculate the matching width. Percentage mode remains proportional automatically. If you deliberately unlock the ratio and enter dimensions with a different shape, the full image is stretched to fit those dimensions rather than cropped.

The Do not enlarge option is enabled by default. It prevents the output from exceeding the source image dimensions, which is helpful because making a raster image larger cannot recreate detail that was never captured. You can disable the option when larger dimensions are required, but the result may look softer or more pixelated.

Export the resized image in its original supported format or choose JPEG, PNG, or WebP. PNG and WebP can preserve transparent areas, while JPEG replaces transparency with white. The current JPEG and WebP exports use a fixed encoder-quality setting and do not provide a quality slider.

The tool processes one JPG, PNG, or WebP image at a time, with a maximum file size of 20 MB. Resizing and export use browser image and canvas APIs, so the image file is not uploaded for processing. Very large source dimensions can still require substantial browser memory even when the compressed file is under 20 MB.

How to use Image Resizer

  1. Step 1. Choose one JPG, PNG, or WebP image no larger than 20 MB.
  2. Step 2. Select Pixels for exact dimensions, Percentage for proportional scaling, or Preset for a common web or social size.
  3. Step 3. Set the target size. In Pixels mode, keep the aspect-ratio lock enabled unless you intentionally want to stretch the full image.
  4. Step 4. Leave Do not enlarge enabled to avoid exceeding the source dimensions, then choose Original, JPEG, PNG, or WebP as the output format.
  5. Step 5. Start the resize, review the before-and-after dimensions and file sizes, and use the downloaded result or adjust the settings and try again.

Privacy and formats

Image decoding, resizing, and export run locally in your browser. Your image file is not uploaded for resizing. DevToolKit may receive usage and diagnostic metadata, such as the selected mode, output format, dimensions, and byte counts, but the identified resize analytics do not include the raw image.

Image Resizer scales the entire frame and does not crop it. Keep the aspect-ratio lock enabled to avoid stretching, and keep Do not enlarge enabled unless larger dimensions are essential. Situations where this workflow saves time.

The result looks stretched — enable the aspect-ratio lock or use Percentage mode so width and height remain proportional.
The image did not become larger — Do not enlarge is enabled by default. Disable it only when larger output dimensions are necessary and some softness is acceptable.
A transparent background became white — JPEG does not support transparency in this export path. Choose PNG or WebP instead.
The dimensions are smaller but the file is still larger than expected — dimensions, image detail, format, and encoder settings all affect file size. Use Image Compressor when reducing bytes is the primary goal.
A very large image fails or makes the page slow — files must be no larger than 20 MB, but extremely large pixel dimensions can still exceed practical browser memory or canvas limits.
The output lost animation or original metadata — the tool creates a new still image through browser canvas and does not explicitly copy animation frames or EXIF metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded when I resize it?

No image file is uploaded for resizing. Decoding, scaling, and export happen locally in your browser. DevToolKit may receive usage and diagnostic metadata such as the selected mode, format, dimensions, and byte counts, but the identified resize analytics do not include the raw image.

Can I resize several images at once?

No. Image Resizer currently processes one JPG, PNG, or WebP image at a time. Complete or reset the current workflow before choosing another image.

Should I use Pixels, Percentage, or Preset mode?

Use Pixels when you have an exact width and height requirement. Use Percentage to scale the full image proportionally. Use Preset when you want a quick starting size for a social post, story, thumbnail, banner, or profile image.

What does Do not enlarge mean?

When enabled, the output is capped so it does not exceed the source dimensions. This avoids creating a larger raster image that may appear softer or more pixelated. The option is enabled by default.

Why does the image look stretched?

Stretching can occur when the aspect-ratio lock is disabled and the target width and height use a different shape from the source. Enable the lock or use Percentage mode to preserve the original proportions.

Does resizing always reduce the file size?

No. Smaller pixel dimensions often help, but file size also depends on image detail, output format, transparency, and encoder settings. Use Image Compressor when a lower byte size is the main requirement.

Which format should I use for transparency?

Use PNG or WebP when transparent areas must be preserved. JPEG does not support transparency here and fills transparent pixels with white.

Can I adjust JPEG or WebP quality?

Not in the current Image Resizer interface. JPEG and WebP use a fixed encoder-quality setting. Use Image Compressor afterward if you need direct control over the quality and file-size tradeoff.

Can resizing improve a low-resolution image?

Resizing can produce larger pixel dimensions, but it cannot recreate missing detail. Enlarged raster images may appear soft or pixelated, which is why Do not enlarge is enabled by default.

Does Image Resizer crop or rotate the image?

No. It scales the full image frame. Use Image Crop to change framing and Image Rotate & Flip to change orientation before or after resizing.

Are animation and EXIF metadata preserved?

They are not guaranteed to be preserved. The result is re-encoded as a still image through browser canvas, and the implementation does not explicitly copy animation frames or original EXIF metadata.
