Unit Converter converts numeric measurements within six implemented categories: Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, and Speed. Length covers millimeter through mile; Weight covers milligram through metric ton plus pound and ounce; Temperature covers Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin; Area covers square centimeters through square kilometers plus hectare, acre, and square foot/inch; Volume covers milliliter, liter, and US gallon, quart, pint, cup, tablespoon, and teaspoon; Speed covers meters per second, kilometers per hour, miles per hour, knots, and feet per second.

Non-temperature categories convert through a defined base unit by multiplying the input by the source factor and dividing by the destination factor. Temperature uses separate affine formulas with Celsius as the intermediate scale because those scales do not share a common zero. Results update live as the value, category, or units change. Inputs are parsed with JavaScript Number, so period decimals and scientific notation such as 1e6 are accepted, while thousands separators and decimal commas are not.

Displayed results use JavaScript floating-point arithmetic and the tool’s roundSmart formatter—locale-aware grouping for larger magnitudes, limited fraction digits, and scientific-style precision for very small values. Volume gallons, quarts, pints, cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons follow the US definitions coded in the tool; Weight’s ton is the metric ton (t). Negative Kelvin and other physically questionable values are accepted mathematically because no absolute-zero or category-specific physical validation is applied. Cups-to-grams conversion is not available because that requires ingredient density.

Conversion stays in the browser. Entered numbers and unit selections are not posted to a conversion API. Ordinary website assets may still load. Identified analytics may include the selected category on start and first success—not the numeric input, converted output, or unit identifiers.

Only the units listed in each category are available—there is no nautical mile, fluid ounce, imperial gallon, short or long ton, or cross-category conversion. Swap exchanges the From and To selectors while keeping the same input number; it does not move the previous result into the input. Copy result copies the formatted number; Copy full equation copies a value-and-unit sentence. There is no history, favorites, CSV export, or print mode. For regulated, safety-critical, or high-precision work, verify constants and required standards with an authoritative source.

Practical tips before you download or share the output.

Six categories. Linear units: input × sourceFactor ÷ destinationFactor. Temperature via Celsius formulas; negative Kelvin not blocked. Volume uses US gallon/quart/pint/cup/tbsp/tsp. Weight ton = metric tonne. Number() parsing; no comma decimals. roundSmart display; locale-dependent grouping. Swap exchanges selectors only. Analytics may include category—not values/units. No history/export. Not for medical or certified metrology use.

Common problems this tool helps with

Situations where this workflow saves time.

Input is blank or not numeric — enter a finite number; non-numeric text and Infinity show a validation error.
A decimal comma such as 1,5 is rejected — the parser expects a period as the decimal separator.
Thousands separators such as 1,000 fail — remove grouping commas before converting.
The displayed result differs slightly from another calculator — JavaScript floating-point math and roundSmart formatting limit displayed digits.
Gallon, cup, or spoon results disagree with an imperial recipe chart — this tool’s volume units use US definitions, not imperial gallons or metric cups.
Metric ton versus short or long ton — Weight’s ton is labeled Metric Ton (t) and equals 1000 kilograms.
Negative Kelvin is accepted — there is no absolute-zero check; physically invalid temperatures are not blocked.
Very large or very small numbers look unusual — formatting may use locale grouping or precision/scientific-style display.
Swap does not put the previous result into the input — it only exchanges the From and To unit selectors.
Copy result or Copy full equation does nothing — the browser may block clipboard access; grant permission or copy manually.

Frequently asked questions

What does Unit Converter do?

It converts a numeric value between two units inside one of six categories—Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, and Speed—and shows related values for the other units in that category.

Which categories are available?

Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, and Speed. There are no data-storage, pressure, energy, currency, or cooking-density categories.

What is the default category and unit pair?

The tool opens on Length with Meter as From and Kilometer as To, and the default input value is 1.

How do non-temperature conversions work?

Each linear category has a base unit. The tool multiplies the input by the source unit’s factor to reach the base unit, then divides by the destination unit’s factor.

How does temperature conversion work?

Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin convert through Celsius with affine formulas—for example Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32—not with a single multiplicative factor.

Are values below absolute zero blocked?

No. Negative Kelvin and other extreme temperatures are accepted mathematically. The converter does not validate physical temperature limits.

Which volume definitions are used?

Gallon, quart, pint, and cup are labeled or factored as US units. Tablespoon and teaspoon use the matching US volume factors against the liter base. Imperial gallon and metric cup are not available.

What does the Weight ton unit mean?

It is Metric Ton (t), equal to 1000 kilograms. Short ton and long ton are not available.

Can I convert cups to grams?

No. Cups-to-grams depends on ingredient density and is not a direct unit conversion in this tool.

Which number formats are accepted?

Finite numbers parsed by JavaScript Number, including integers, period decimals, leading decimals such as .5, signs, and scientific notation such as 1e6. Grouping commas and decimal commas are not accepted.

Are negative values allowed?

Yes for every category. Negative length, mass, area, volume, or speed may be mathematically converted even when they are not physically meaningful.

How is the result rounded?

roundSmart formats finite results: zero as 0; larger magnitudes with locale-aware grouping and limited fraction digits; values under 1 with precision trimming. Copied text matches the formatted display.

Does output follow my locale?

Display formatting uses the browser locale for grouping and decimal separators on many values. Input parsing still expects Number-compatible syntax with a period decimal separator.

What does Swap do?

Swap exchanges the From and To unit selectors and keeps the same numeric input. It does not replace the input with the previous converted result.

What happens when I change category?

The numeric input is kept. From and To reset to the first two units of the new category—for example Weight becomes Kilogram → Gram.

Can I convert between different categories?

No. Conversions stay inside the selected category. Length cannot become area, and volume cannot become weight without extra context such as density.

Where does conversion run, and are values uploaded?

Conversion runs locally in the browser. Entered values and unit selections are not uploaded for processing. Ordinary site requests and optional analytics metadata may still occur.

What can I copy or export?

Copy result copies the formatted number. Copy full equation copies a sentence such as value, source unit, equals, result, destination unit. There is no history, favorites, CSV export, or print mode.

Is there a fluid ounce or nautical mile unit?

No. Those units are not in the current selectors. Closest volume options are milliliter, liter, and the listed US household volumes; closest length options stop at mile.

Is this suitable for medical or certified engineering work?

No. Results are for ordinary reference calculations. For regulated, safety-critical, or high-precision work, verify constants and required standards independently.

Does Reset clear the category?

Reset converter restores the current category’s default From/To units and sets the input back to 1. It does not change the selected category.

What analytics does Unit Converter send?

Identified events may include the selected category on start and first success. They do not include the numeric input, output value, or unit keys.
