YouTube Thumbnail Downloader accepts a supported YouTube URL or a valid 11-character video ID and displays the five implemented YouTube-hosted JPG thumbnail variants: Max Resolution, Standard Definition, High Quality, Medium Quality, and Default. It is a thumbnail-link viewer and opener, not a YouTube video or audio downloader and not a tool that generates a new image.
Parsing runs in the browser. A raw ID is accepted only when it matches exactly eleven characters from the set letters, digits, underscore, and hyphen. Supported links include youtu.be short links and YouTube pages on youtube.com, www.youtube.com, or m.youtube.com when a valid v parameter or final path segment yields that ID—covering common watch, Shorts, embed, and live-style paths when the parser can obtain a valid ID. The tool then builds CDN URLs of the form https://i.ytimg.com/vi/{videoId}/{file} and loads each variant from YouTube’s image server.
Each card uses the tool’s labels and expected dimensions—1280×720, 640×480, 480×360, 320×180, and 120×90—but those figures are stated sizes, not measured file properties for every response. Max Resolution is not guaranteed. Availability is checked by creating a browser Image for each URL: load errors mark a size unavailable, and a Max Resolution image whose natural width is at most 120 or height at most 90 is treated as a placeholder and marked unavailable. Network blocks, missing sizes, and inaccessible videos can look similar, so the probe is not an authoritative public/private/deleted status check. When multiple sizes load, selection prefers Max Resolution, then SD, HQ, MQ, and Default.
Open image opens the selected CDN URL in a new tab with window.open; the browser or device then controls whether the JPG opens or can be saved. The app does not force-download a Blob, use a download attribute, create a local file, or assign a custom filename—CDN names such as maxresdefault.jpg may appear when saving from that tab. Copy image URL copies the direct link; Copy full summary copies the video ID, watch URL, label, stated size, and image URL. Parsing stays in the browser, but previews require requests to i.ytimg.com. Identified DevToolKit events may include tool start/success and thumbnailCount equal to the fixed list length of five—not the pasted URL, video ID, or available-size count.
The tool does not download video or audio, extract an arbitrary frame, edit or upscale artwork, or call the YouTube Data API for titles, privacy status, or ownership. It cannot bypass private, deleted, or restricted videos, and a loaded thumbnail does not prove a video is currently public or playable. Opening or saving a publicly reachable thumbnail does not grant permission to republish it—confirm the creator’s permission, applicable license, and relevant rules before reuse.
