The guide and instructions on this page are available while the tool loads.

Continue your workflow

  • Protect PDFPassword-protect the watermarked file.
  • Compress PDFReduce size before emailing.
  • Merge PDFCombine with other documents.

PDF Watermark draws either a text label or one PNG/JPG logo onto pages of a single PDF. Use it to communicate status, intended use, or branding—for example Draft, Confidential, Internal, or a project name—not to encrypt or lock the file.

Choose All pages, First page, or a Custom range such as 2, 4-7. Pick Text or Image for the run (not both at once). Text starts as CONFIDENTIAL with Helvetica Bold, size, color, uppercase, opacity 0.05–1, and rotation −90° to 90°. Image mode accepts one PNG or JPG up to 5 MB with logo scale. Layout can be Single with a position preset, or Tiled to repeat the same mark. There are no manual X/Y offsets and no odd/even page modes.

Processing uses pdf-lib to draw text or embed and draw an image on each target page without intentionally rasterizing the whole page. Mixed page sizes are handled per page from that page’s dimensions. Existing page content stays as PDF content; forms, links, annotations, and attachments are not intentionally stripped, but every advanced feature is not guaranteed after rewrite. Placement is drawn on top of page content.

The PDF, watermark text, and logo bytes stay in the browser for this task. Ordinary website assets may still load. This screen does not emit identified tool analytics for filenames, watermark text, logo bytes, or PDF contents.

One PDF up to 50 MB is accepted. There is no password field; loading uses ignoreEncryption, so encrypted files may still fail or behave unexpectedly—unlock an authorized copy first. The settings preview is an approximate CSS overlay on the original PDF, not an exact render of the saved file. Output is {base}-watermarked.pdf. Existing certificate signatures can become invalid. A visible watermark can be removed or covered by PDF software and does not prevent copying, printing, or screenshots. Reset clears the workspace and is not a dedicated mid-run cancel control.

Privacy and formats

Watermarking runs locally in your browser with pdf-lib. The selected PDF, watermark text, and PNG/JPG logo are not uploaded to DevToolKit for this task. The PDF Watermark screen does not call identified tool analytics events for the file. Ordinary site assets may still load.

Common problems this tool helps with

Situations where this workflow saves time.

The PDF is larger than 50 MB — the upload validation rejects it before watermarking.
The PDF will not open or inspect correctly — it may be corrupt, empty, or encrypted without a password field here.
Watermark text is empty — enter text, or switch to Image mode and upload a PNG/JPG logo.
A custom page range fails — use valid numbers and ranges within the page count, such as 2, 4-7.
The mark is too faint — raise opacity toward 100% and check contrast against the page background.
The mark hides important content — lower opacity, reduce font size or logo scale, change position, or reduce tiling density by switching to Single.
Placement looks different on mixed page sizes — each page is positioned from its own width and height; inspect every critical page.
The saved file differs from the editor preview — the preview is an approximate CSS overlay, so trust the downloaded PDF.
An existing certificate signature is no longer valid — saving a rewritten PDF commonly breaks prior signatures.
Automatic download is blocked — use the download control on the result screen for {base}-watermarked.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

What does PDF Watermark do?

It draws a text label or one PNG/JPG logo onto selected pages of a PDF and downloads a separate -watermarked.pdf file.

Which watermark types are supported?

Text or Image for each run. You choose one type; text and logo are not applied together in the same pass.

Does text watermarking work?

Yes. Default text is CONFIDENTIAL. You can edit the string, toggle uppercase, and choose a standard PDF font.

Can I use a logo or image watermark?

Yes. Image mode accepts one PNG or JPG/JPEG file up to 5 MB. SVG, WebP, and GIF are not accepted here.

How many PDFs can I watermark per run?

One PDF at a time, up to 50 MB.

Which pages receive the watermark?

All pages, the first page only, or a Custom range resolved with the shared page-range parser (for example 2, 4-7).

Is there an odd-pages or even-pages mode?

No. Use All, First page, or Custom ranges. Odd/even presets are not provided.

Which fonts and sizes are available?

Helvetica Bold, Helvetica, Times Roman, and Courier. The UI font-size control ranges from 12 to 96.

Can I set color and opacity?

Text color uses a color picker. Opacity ranges from 0.05 to 1 for both text and image marks.

What rotation and position controls exist?

Rotation ranges from −90° to 90°. Single layout uses center and corner/edge presets. Manual X/Y offsets are not available.

Can the watermark be tiled?

Yes. Tiled layout repeats the same text or logo across each selected page. Single layout places one mark using the position preset.

Do mixed page dimensions work?

Yes. Each target page uses its own width and height when calculating placement.

Are pages rasterized into images?

No. pdf-lib draws text or embeds and draws an image onto the page. Original page content is not intentionally converted to a full-page raster.

Are forms, links, and annotations preserved?

They are not intentionally removed, but every advanced PDF feature is not guaranteed after rewrite. Verify important interactive content in the output.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?

There is no password field. The helper loads with ignoreEncryption, but encrypted files may still fail or behave unexpectedly. Unlock an authorized copy first.

Does a watermark prevent copying or removal?

No. A visible watermark communicates status or branding. It does not encrypt the file, stop screenshots, or make the mark impossible to remove.

What happens to existing digital signatures?

Rewriting the PDF can invalidate existing certificate signatures. Re-sign or re-verify signed documents after watermarking if signatures matter.

Does the tool rewrite document metadata?

It does not intentionally edit metadata fields in this workflow. Confirm any required metadata in the downloaded file if it matters for your process.

Is processing local, and is the PDF uploaded?

Processing is local with pdf-lib. The PDF, watermark text, and logo bytes are not uploaded to DevToolKit for watermarking. Ordinary site assets may still load.

What is the output filename?

The download is named {base}-watermarked.pdf, where {base} is the source filename without the .pdf extension.

Is the preview exact?

No. Settings use an approximate CSS overlay on the original PDF preview. Always inspect the downloaded file for final placement and appearance.

Can watermarking be cancelled, and is analytics sent?

There is no dedicated cancel control once processing starts; Reset clears the workspace afterward. The PDF Watermark component does not call identified tool analytics events for the file.
